Method

What is determined, and what is only offered.

The numbers are not a guess. Three coins, tossed six times, give a sum that is 6, 7, 8, or 9. Six and nine are changing lines; seven and eight are stable. The bottom-to-top pattern resolves to one of the 64 hexagrams, and any changing lines flip to reveal the relating hexagram. None of this depends on a model, an API, or your mood.

Everything written beneath that calculation is original to this project. The traditional Chinese source material is public domain; specific English translations by contemporary publishers are not. We use widely-accepted English names from the public-domain nineteenth-century tradition. Every interpretive sentence in the reflection is freshly written here, for this tool.

The question

Why questions matter more than answers.

A reading is only as honest as the question that opens it. A vague question produces a vague mirror. A question with a small action inside it produces something you can actually meet.

We don’t rewrite your question. We sit beside it and offer gentle suggestions: open the wording a little, name a small action, give it a horizon of time. The words stay yours.

Good questions often begin with how, whether, or what would it look like if. They are short, concrete, and about something you can actually do next.

The lines

Changing lines, without confusion.

Each line is either stable (young yang = 7, young yin = 8) or changing (old yang = 9, old yin = 6). Changing lines are the parts of the situation that are already in motion. They flip in the relating hexagram, which is where the change is pointing.

A reading with no changing lines is not “weaker.” It says the pattern you’re standing in is intact; stay with it. A reading with many changing lines says the situation is genuinely in flux; expect the shape to move, and don’t grip the old form too tightly.

We show the changing lines in the figure with a small cinnabar mark, and we list them again in plain language below the figures.

After the reading

Why return to a reading later.

The first pass through a reading often catches the obvious. The quieter meanings show up on the second or third visit, when you have had a few days to forget what you wanted to hear.

You can also come back with the same question weeks later. The reflection will not change, but you will. What looked like background noise becomes the centre. What looked central becomes context.

There is no streak, no score, no progress meter. A reading is a moment, not a metric. Sit with it as long as it is useful; set it down when it isn’t.
